As one of the core values in our organizational culture, Passion is maybe the most important and authentic motivator in software development companies and we see it as the essence of all motivators.

It is said that we care about the survival of our organization if we care about Innovation, and we care about innovation if we care about Creativity, and we care about creativity if we care about Motivation, and of course we care about motivation if we care about Passion.

But more than that, Passion is not just a positive motivator but also an intrinsic motivator, meaning that it cannot be really influenced by external factors and this will make our task a bit harder but not impossible.

So yes, it looks like people have or don’t have the Passion for coding/testing, and yes external motivators seem to inhibit Creativity and they are actually proven to make things worse but let’s see what can be done.

At Adaptabi, based on the Two-factor theory and Management 3.0 concepts, we are growing a Creative and Motivational Environment.

A Creative Environment is where people:

  • Are safe to express ideas
  • Can turn ordinary activities into little games
  • Can variate their work because routine kills creativity
  • View what others in company are doing and can get inspired
  • Realize that cannot tackle with Innovation unless facing edge discomfort

A Motivational Environment is where people:

  • Have challenging work
  • Have their achievements recognized
  • Are supported in their personal growth
  • Have job security and satisfying salaries
  • Have good working conditions
  • Don’t have to worry about office politics

A Passionate Environment (if the concept exists), would be one where passion is the energy that fuels all the actions within, and the levels are always increasing and Passion can be easily stimulated.

Now, we know something like that is not truly realistic, but there are things that can be done like ensuring people are not demotivated, creativity is not killed and with the right people Passion will nicely come into play.

From a practical point of view here are some things we do:

  • Help people finding their true Passion by finding the right place
  • Have quarterly discussions about company and general progress
  • Have monthly discussions about objectives (aiming for OKR)
  • Support Education Days in the company on a constant basis
  • Encourage knowledge sharing via company presentations, blogs and chats

With these being said we are all trying to make Adaptabi a better company and to get it a bit closer to the ideal one because life is too short to spend it on jobs we don’t love!
